THE FRQSC PAPAGENO INTERUNIVERSITY SUICIDE PREVENTION TEAM
The FRQSC Papageno Interuniversity Research Team in Suicide Prevention is supported by the Fonds de Recherche du Québec – Société et Culture. It brings together 8 suicide prevention researchers from 5 universities, who combine their expertise (in psychology, psychiatry, pediatrics and education) to mobilize evidence-based knowledge, not only for the scientific community, but also for the next generation of students and the general public.
The character of Papageno from Mozart’s opera “The Magic Flute” is a symbol of suicide prevention. Papageno was contemplating suicide when he realized he had lost his beloved. As he was about to take his own life, three characters reminded him of alternatives, and Papageno chose not to take his own life. Sharing such hopeful stories is known to protect against suicide.
